"Scientific research benefits from Space to Earth – An overview"

Exploration is a driver for science and knowledge creation spurring innovation and economic growth. Advancements in research and technologies touching every aspect of everyday life—health and medicine, public safety, consumer goods, industrial productivity, transportation and many others are a direct result of space exploration. In the last several years, job creation and economic growth have been accelerated by private investments in the space sector.
The European Space Agency (ESA) is Europe’s gateway to space. Its mission is to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and to ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world.
In particular, ESA’s SciSpacE (Science in the Space Environment) research program in the Directorate of Human Spaceflight and Robotic Exploration offers European and international researchers unique possibilities to access the space environment, addressing investigations in the fields of Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Planetary Sciences and Radiation. With over 1900 scientists involved in more than 200 projects, the science community investigates questions important for space exploration or which provide benefits to Earth. Most importantly, SciSpacE research pushes the frontiers of our knowledge, technology development and human possibilities, in the pursuit of enabling space exploration and providing benefits to the sustainable development of society.
Leonardo Surdo started his career at the European Space Agency in 2013 and currently works as project scientist for biology and environmental monitoring science experiments on-board the International Space Station (ISS), other microgravity platforms, including parabolic flights, sounding rockets and sub-orbital capsules as well as on-board the lunar Gateway. He works on defining the scientific requirements of space experiments ranging from cell biology, microbiology, radiobiology, plant biology, tissue engineering to life support systems for human spaceflight. He also provides support to the development of experiments’ payloads in the ESA Directorate of Human Spaceflight and Robotic Exploration.

Dr. Heinz Mayer, Joanneum Research
Heinz Mayer is CEO of JOANNEUM RESEARCH in Graz since 2021.
He graduated from Graz University of Technology with a master degree in Telematics and a doctoral degree respectively. From 2001 to 2007 he worked for the automotive industry holding different positions in the area of information management. Finally as head of the engineering information management division at MAGNA STEYR. Besides the professional activities during 2003 - 2005 he was industry coordinator of the work area “Virtual Engineering” at the competence center "The Virtual Vehicle".
Since 2007 he is with JOANNEUM RESEARCH starting as Head of the research unit Machine Vision Applications. In 2013 he gained the responsibility of leading the institute DIGITAL and in 2021 he was appointed as CEO.
Digital technologies are one of the core business areas of JOANNEUM RESEARCH and are therefore part of his current responsibilities. Past and ongoing projects focus on intelligent sensor systems, communication technology, remote sensing, information management including IT security.
Heinz Mayer is founder, holds several patents and is member of the professional organizations IEEE and ACM and member of the strategic community of the Austrian government.

Assoc. Prof Nandu Goswami, MD, PhD, Spaceflight & Aging
Assoc. Prof Nandu Goswami, MD, PhD, is a medical doctor and a cardiovascular physiologist with special interests in spaceflight physiology. He is the Acting Chair of Physiology Division and is the Head of Research group “Gravitational Physiology, Aging and Medicine” at the Medical University of Graz, Austria. In his research unit, he carries out spaceflight physiology research as well as its application on Earth (“Life in Space for Life on Earth”). his current research area is systemic and integrative physiology, with particular emphasis on cardiovascular regulation. Specific areas in which he has published include syncope, orthostatic intolerance, head up tilt, lower body negative pressure, cerebral blood flow, as well as hemodynamic monitoring and role of volume regulating hormones during central hypovolemia. He examines the parallels between spaceflight and aging and how countermeasures developed in space for astronauts can help older bedrest confined persons on Earth (“Spaceflight meets Geriatrics”).
Dr Goswami is the President of Austrian Physiological Society and a member of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA). In addition to being a part of the ESA bedrest expert team and a coordinator of a European Space Agency (ESA) approved Topical Team on thromboembolism, Dr Goswami is a member of the Working Group on Space and Human Health at United Nations Office for Outer Space (UNOOSA). Dr Goswami has published over 145 papers in the field of cardiovascular system and vascular function assessments in health and diseases.

Lars-Peter Kamolz was born on the 11th March 1972 in Berlin/ Germany. He has studied Medicine at the University of Vienna, Medical School, Vienna, Austria (M.D.). Moreover, he has studied Quality and Process-Management at the Department for Knowledge and Communication Management at Danube University in Krems, Austria (M.Sc.). He is a Board-Certified Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgeon (ÖGPÄRC). In 2012, he became Professor for Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Division of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Surgery, Medical University of Graz and Head of the Division of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Surgery, Medical University of Graz, Austria. Furthermore, he is the Head of the Research Unit for Safety and Sustainability in Healthcare and Deputy Chief Medical Officer of the LKH-University Hospital in Graz. Since 2018 he is also Director of COREMED – Cooperative centre for regenerative Medicine at Joanneum Research Forschungsgesellschaft mbH. He is a Certified Quality Manager, EOQ Quality Systems Manager, Certified Risk Manager, EFQM Assessor and Auditor for Quality Management Systems. His research Focus is Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, Burn Care, Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering, Ageing, Quality and Risk Management, Health Literacy and Sustainability. He is Editor and Member of the Review Board of several international Journals, Author of more than 230 peer reviewed article, editor of several books and book chapters. He was awarded several times from different scientific organisations for his scientific work.

Martin Mössler studied mechanical engineering at University of Technology Graz, then Political Science in Salzburg, International Relations in Oxford, and completed a Master´s degree at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Professional positions led to the staff of Federal President (Department of Science and Research), the management of a tourism company as well as the rectorate of the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.
From 2010-2016 he worked as the assistant to the Rector of TU Graz, Univ. Prof. Dr. Hans Sünkel, President of the Austrian University Conference, Satellite Geodesist and Head of various ESA Missions and a full member of the IAF. Since June 2016, Martin Mössler has been Managing Director of Science Park Graz, which also manages the European Space Agency’s Business Incubation Centre for Austria and Southeast Europe.
Due to his leadership competence, his international biography and broad networking skills, he leads the Austrian organization successfully and even managed to cover the entire value chain of incubation by bringing the ESA BIC to Austria and beyond. He still works with Hans Sünkel, who is on the Board of ESA BIC Austria, as well as with former long-term ESA Director General, Jean- Jacques Dordain, who is member of the Board of ESA BIC Austria as well.
